How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in like-new condition. Optics are perfect with no scratches. Focus and aperture operate as smoothly as a new lens. Internal components are tight with no audible internal lens movement. The exterior body is in like-new condition, but there is some paint loss or 2-3 small scratches along the edges of the lens barrel or on the focus ring and aperture ring. (Need to look closely to notice them.)
How this lens renders
Compared to the 85mm f/2.0 of the same spec, the Jupiter-9 is a soft portrait lens modeled after the Zeiss Sonnar, earning it the nickname "Soviet Bokeh King." Wide open at f/2.0, it delivers a soft, low-contrast, filmic image with beautifully rendered skin tones, ideal for portrait work. Stop down to f/2.8 and the center becomes noticeably sharper f/5.6 — sharp across the center — while the edges improve by about f/11. The real selling point is the bokeh — it melts backgrounds into smooth, round orbs thanks to its 15 aperture blades in the 1958 version, producing beautifully continuous out-of-focus circles. Vignetting is less than you'd expect for a lens of this size (measured at roughly 1.6 EV wide open) and is barely noticeable when stopped down. One thing to note: this lens has noticeable sample-to-sample variation — some units have stiff focus rings. I'd recommend trying the focus ring before accepting the item. It's a practical vintage portrait lens that deserves a place in any collection.
