Inspector’s condition notes

The lens has seen heavy use. This particular copy features the S.C.C (Super Spectra Coating = Multi Coating), which is very rare for a lens of this focal length — earlier versions typically came with S.C. (Single Coating) only. The lens has a very wide shooting range, making it well-suited for full-frame mirrorless cameras such as the Sony A7, A7II, A7R, and A7S. The front optical element shows cleaning marks. No fungus or haze present. The rear element is clean. Focus and aperture operate smoothly, as if new. Internal components are complete and intact, with some dust particles present as-is. Overall external condition shows use — there are scratches, paint loss/missing paint on the body, and the numbers on the focus scale are no longer clearly legible, with some having faded or worn off.

How this lens renders

Compared to other ultra-wide 20mm lenses of the same Canon FD 20mm spec f/2.8, this one stands out for delivering sharpness and contrast well above its class in this wide angle range. At wide open f/2.8, it offers usable sharpness—the center resolves detail well, while the edges remain somewhat soft. Stop down to f/8-16 and it's sharp corner to corner, with noticeably tighter contrast, courtesy of the S.S.C. coating. The color rendering has a gently vintage character—pleasing rather than heavy-handed. The bokeh is impressive for a wide lens, particularly when the background isn't cluttered. The lens also shows a touch of natural moustache distortion typical of this focal range. Flare is normal for a wide angle; if you'd like to avoid it when shooting into the light, I'd recommend a lens hood. Ideal for anyone seeking a lightweight, reasonably priced vintage wide angle lens that works seamlessly on mirrorless cameras. A worthwhile option worth keeping in your kit.
