How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
This lens is in excellent optical and mechanical condition, with pristine glass elements and smooth focusing and aperture rings. Cosmetically, it is very clean, showing only minor signs of handling such as light scuffs on the metal base and around the rear. The barrel, knurled grip, and markings are well preserved, with no major dents or significant paint loss.
How this lens renders
The Makinon 24mm f/2.8 lens stands out for its Helios-style swirly bokeh, especially in close-ups, creating distinct oval effects at the closest focusing distances. This unique bokeh makes it a popular choice among those seeking creative, dreamy backgrounds. Additionally, its warm color saturation provides a soft, inviting palette often enriched by flares and haze. However, this lens is notably susceptible to strong flares and haze in backlit scenes, necessitating careful use of a matte box to manage these effects. Sharpness is concentrated in the center when wide open and significantly improves when stopped down, along with contrast, from f/5.6.
Honest disclosure
Makinon 24mm f2.8
The Makinon 24mm f/2.8 is a bargain-priced, characterful vintage wide-angle from the late 1970s known for Helios-style swirly bokeh, warm haze, and sharp centers with soft edges, favored by cinematographers and creative shooters.
