How we gradeHow this lens renders
Compared to the 55mm lens of the same spec, this Takumar stands out for its classic image rendering and the solid, confidence-inspiring feel of its focus action. It's a standard lens that Asahi produced in several versions (Auto, Super, SMC). Wide open at f/2, the center is acceptably sharp, with soft, film-like contrast. Stopping down to f/2.8 brings a noticeable improvement in sharpness, and at f/8 the result is crisp and clean to the eye. The bokeh melts the background smoothly and roundly, without distracting busyness — delivering the gentle, refined character typical of vintage lenses. There's no swirling or soap-bubble effect. Colors render clean and clear, with flexible tonal detail that's well-suited to further grading. The single-coated version gives a hazier, dreamier backlit feel with reduced contrast when pointed into the sun, while the SMC version adds Super-Multi-Coating for noticeably better flare control. If you'd prefer to avoid flare, I'd recommend using a hood when shooting into the light. Overall, it's a compact vintage lens that's genuinely enjoyable to shoot with — well suited to those who love soft, vintage-style tones, and certainly worth adding to a collection.
