How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in good condition. The Optical is perfect with no scratches, but has more dust than usual, though it does not affect the photos. Focus and aperture operate smoothly like a new lens. Internal components are tight with no internal rattle. There is a small dent around the filter area, but a filter can still be attached. The exterior body shows signs of use, with visible scratches and paint loss easily noticeable around the lens body.
How this lens renders
Compared to the 58mm lens of the same specs, this Minolta MC Rokkor-PG 58mm f/1.2 is a wide-aperture breed with two personalities in one. At f/1.2, it renders soft, gentle images with character — a touch artistic, well suited to mood work. Stop down to f/2 and the sharpness comes in fully — even sharper than the 1.4/58 version — while the contrast climbs steadily as you stop down to f/8. The real highlight, though, is the bokeh. Wide open, you'll see ringed, flying-saucer-shaped bokeh at the edges of the frame. Stop down just a touch and it transforms into beautiful rugby-ball shapes, melting the background apart with wonderful smoothness. The colors are rich and a joy to use. This lens can also produce vignetting as a moody frame wide open, and it clears on its own once you stop down. The early version uses lens elements containing Thorium (you can spot it by the yellow tint that develops on the lens element when it hasn't been exposed to sunlight or UV for a while) — part of the charm for collectors. This lens suits anyone looking for its own distinct character, and it deserves a place in any collection.
