How this lens renders

Compared to the lens 20mm f/2.8 with the same specs, this one is a UW-Nikkor made specifically for the Nikonos system. It's a water-contact lens designed to focus only underwater — not intended for shooting on land. Truly a specialized tool for underwater work. Sharpness is outstanding underwater. Wide open at f/2.8, the center is sharp from the start. Stop down to f/5.6-f/8 and you've hit the sweet spot — sharp edge-to-edge across the entire frame, punchy microcontrast, and lovely rendering of surface textures. Overall contrast is well-balanced, still holding dimension in the shadows even when underwater light gets tricky. With its wide angle focal length, the Depth of field is naturally generous, but when you get close enough for a shallower range, the bokeh comes out soft and unobtrusive. Colors lean toward a slightly cool midtone, fitting in beautifully with the blue-green underwater spectrum. Flare is well controlled by the coating. At f/2.8 there's faint vignetting, but it disappears once you stop down. A great match for Nikonos-system underwater photographers and collectors looking for a rare specialty lens — well worth adding to a collection.
