How we gradeHow this lens renders
The Minolta 50mm f/2.0 is an honest performer among standard primes, notable for its clean rendering as you stop down. Compared to its typical fast fifty peers, this lens offers very good center and midframe sharpness wide open, becoming excellent by f/2.8, although it falls short in corner contrast at initial apertures. While bokeh isn’t a standout—showing some outlining at f/2—it's neither detrimental nor a major focus of the lens's design. However, its build quality is a drawback; with a metal barrel and mount surrounded by a more plasticky feel, it's less substantial than other manual lenses from the era. But for those seeking portability and stopped-down sharpness, particularly for landscapes, this lens is still a practical choice.
Honest disclosure
