How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Clean condition lens. Optical elements are perfect with no scratches. Focus and aperture operate smoothly like a new lens. Internal components are tight with no internal lens movement sounds. The exterior body is in like-new condition — no scratches, no scuff marks, and no paint loss.
How this lens renders
Compared to the 50mm of the same spec, this Pancolar f/1.8 from Carl Zeiss Jena is celebrated for its sharper rendering and more vivid contrast than its peers. Wide open at f/1.8, it still delivers usable sharpness in the center of the frame. Stopping down to f/2.8 brings sharpness up across the whole image, and at f/8 it's tack-sharp from edge to edge. The standout trait that's hard to match is its micro-contrast — especially in the multi-coated version — which makes surface textures pop beautifully. The colors are bold and saturated in classic Zeiss fashion. The bokeh melts the background into a smooth, creamy wash with pleasing tonal gradation, free of any swirling or soap-bubble character. The softness feels honest and direct. The early "zebra" version uses lens elements containing Thorium (you can spot it because the lens element yellows when it hasn't been exposed to sunlight or UV for a long time; leaving it in the sun restores its clarity). It's a detail collectors look for. This vintage lens is ideal for anyone wanting classic Zeiss sharpness and color rendering in a compact metal body — a fine piece for the collector.
