Inspector’s condition notes

Lens is in like-new condition. This manual focus zoom is a real pleasure to use — with a minimum aperture of f/2.8, the bokeh is gorgeous, melting into a creamy, oil-painting-like background. Portrait shooting is a breeze, with the subject sharp and the background dissolving easily. It even offers 1:4 macro on top of that. The Optical elements are pristine, with no scratches. Focus and aperture action is buttery smooth, just like a new lens. Internal parts are tight and solid — no play or rattling sounds inside. The exterior body looks like new, but there are a couple of small spots of paint loss or 2–3 minor scratches around the lens barrel edges, focus ring, and aperture ring (you have to look closely to spot them).

How this lens renders

Compared to other telephoto zoom lenses of the same era and spec 70-210mm, this Vivitar Series 1 is known for its character and versatility. It's a vintage lens that was produced by several Japanese manufacturers (Kiron, Tokina, Komine, Cosina), so the rendering personality really varies by version. The well-executed versions deliver solid center sharpness from wide open all the way through f/16, with overall contrast that's genuinely pleasing to use. The Cosina version, on the other hand, tends to render soft wide open and shows a touch of flare; once you stop down, it tightens up noticeably and holds detail much better. The bokeh on this model really depends on which version you get — ranging from smooth, creamy background separation to a bit busier or even slightly swirly on some copies (collectors usually look at the leading serial number — code 28 is Komine, widely regarded as the sharpest in the family). If you land a good version, it's a wonderfully usable manual focus telephoto zoom with a charm all its own — perfect for someone who wants a lens with real character. A worthy keeper, in my view.
