How this lens renders
Compared to the Yashica ML 50mm 50mm f/1.7 of the same specs, this one is the most worthwhile option. Made by Kyocera, it offers build quality at a level many consider a close cousin of the Zeiss Planar. Wide open at f/1.7, the center is sharp from f/2 onward, climbing to a "Zeiss-sharp" tier once you stop down to f/5.6. Contrast is excellent across the full frame — very close to the Planar. The color rendition is accurate and natural, easy to grade in post. Bokeh wide open is soft and creamy, melting the background smoothly. Round, attractive light points become more defined past f/5.6. Flare will be sharp and pronounced when shooting straight into the sun. If you'd rather avoid it, composing slightly off the light source makes it nearly disappear. Perfect for anyone looking for a 50mm manual focus lens with razor-sharp rendering and beautiful color in a genuinely accessible budget. Well worth shooting with and collecting.
