How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in good condition. The optical is perfect with no scratches. Focus and aperture operate smoothly like a new lens. Internal components are tight and solid, with no internal movement or rattling. The exterior body shows signs of use, with visible scratches and paint loss commonly found on the lens body.
How this lens renders
Compared to the 55mm f/1.4 with the same specs, this one is a real gem that many call the "poor man's Pancolar." Manufactured by Tomioka, it delivers character close to a Zeiss lens at a much more accessible price. Wide open at f/1.4, it offers impressively high center sharpness, with the edges softening slightly and some chromatic aberration visible in high-contrast situations. Stop down to f/2.8 and the image is sharp across the entire frame, hitting its sweet spot in the f/8 range. Contrast is good, with pleasing tonal gradation. Bokeh is genuinely a strong point — backgrounds melt smoothly, and the round shape of the out-of-focus highlights is beautiful, very close to the Pancolar. Colors come through warm. One thing collectors should know: the lens elements contain Thorium (you can tell because the glass yellows when left away from sunlight or UV for extended periods). It's part of the unique charm of vintage lenses from that era — a lens well worth picking up and adding to a collection.

Honest disclosure
Sears Tomioka
The Auto Sears 55mm f/1.4 is a Tomioka-made rebadged double-Gauss lens with radioactive thorium glass, reputed to be a 'poor man's Pancolar' delivering sharpness and bokeh nearly indistinguishable from the Zeiss Pancolar 55mm f/1.4 at a fraction of the price.
