How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in like-new condition. This one isn't a knockoff of the Carl Zeiss Planar — CZ actually sold the design and raw materials to Yashica, so it's no surprise that the image quality is almost impossible to tell apart from the CZ Planar, yet it costs less than half the price. The optics are pristine, free of scratches. The focus and aperture ring glide as smoothly as a new lens. The internal elements are solid with no audible shifting inside. The exterior body is in like-new condition, but there are 2–3 small spots of paint loss or fine scratches along the lens barrel edges or near the focus ring and aperture ring (you have to look closely to spot them).
How this lens renders
Compared to other 50mm lenses of the same spec on the Yashica ML f/1.4 market, this one delivers Planar-style sharpness and contrast from Zeiss, but at a much more approachable price. Wide open at f/1.4, the lens softens slightly only when shooting at minimum focus distance. Once you stop down to f/2, sharpness comes through fully, and it's razor-sharp from f/4 onwards. The real standout is the excellent contrast and tonal gradation — it holds detail in dark shadows very well, making it especially well-suited for black-and-white work. The bokeh melts the background smoothly. Low fringing (you may see some purple fringing only when wide open at f/1.4 in harsh lighting). The colors are vivid and stable, with no shift even when shooting into backlight. For anyone looking for a manual focus 50mm lens that delivers Planar-like character at a reasonable budget, this is a practical option worth adding to a collection.
