How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in like-new condition — a top-tier vintage lens, sharp wide open. If you're looking for a great lens to keep mounted on your camera, this one shouldn't be missed. The optical is pristine with no scratch. Focus and aperture ring glide as smoothly as a brand-new lens. Internal components are solid, with no rattling or play inside. The exterior body is in like-new condition, though there are a couple of small spots of paint loss or scratch around the lens barrel edges or near the focus ring and aperture ring (you have to look closely to notice).
How this lens renders
Compared to lenses of the same 50mm spec, this f/1.2 Pentax stands out for its exceptionally smooth background separation. With its wide aperture of f/1.2 wide open, the center of the frame is already sharp, while the edges soften slightly. Stopped down to f/2.8, sharpness improves across the full frame and stays at its most stable through the f/8 range. The color tone leans warm, with pleasingly rich saturation. Contrast is moderate, with flexible retention of detail in the highlights and shadows — well suited to color grading. The bokeh is soft and creamy, dissolving the background beautifully in its own distinctive way. This lens's flare has character and gives images a film-like feel. If you'd prefer to avoid flare, I recommend using a lens hood when shooting into backlight. It can also produce vignetting to draw the eye toward the subject (which fades when stopped down). A manual focus prime lens ideal for those who enjoy shooting portraits with a film-like mood. With its solid, durable build quality, it's well worth adding to a collection.
