How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
The lens is in like-new condition. The lens element is perfect with no scratches. The focus and aperture ring operate as smoothly as a brand-new lens. The internal components are tight, with no audible internal movement. There is a slight trace of oil on the aperture blades, which does not affect usage or image quality. The exterior body of the lens appears like new, though there are a couple of small areas (2–3 spots) of paint loss or fine scratches along the lens barrel edges or around the focus ring and aperture ring (you have to look closely to notice them).
How this lens renders
Compared to a normal lens of the same spec, the standout of this Yashica ML Macro is its full-mark sharpness, paired with close-range macro capability — a worthwhile alternative to Zeiss glass at a much more accessible price. On sharpness, even wide open at f/4 it delivers crisp detail from the center of the frame, and when you stop down to f/8 the sharpness extends across the entire image. Detail rendition is punchy, in the way you'd expect from a macro lens designed specifically with detail work in mind. As for bokeh and background separation, with an aperture of f/4 and a macro-oriented design, the background blurs at a moderate level — better suited to work that prioritizes retaining detail over chasing heavy background melt. Colors come through clean, in the manner of lenses from that era. Build quality feels rock-solid, a full ten out of ten. A well-matched choice for anyone who enjoys close-up work — flowers, collectibles, or any shooting where sharpness is the priority — at a price that's genuinely within reach.

Honest disclosure
Yashica ML Macro
The Yashica ML Macro 55mm is a budget close-focusing macro prime for the Contax/Yashica bayonet, part of Yashica's multi-coated ML line that sat below the Zeiss T* glass yet is repeatedly said to render well enough to be mistaken for a Zeiss lens.
