How this lens renders

Compared to the 28mm with the same spec, this one doesn't lean into a bold character. It positions itself as a wide angle lens that renders straightforwardly — colors are neutral and don't shift, and it pairs nicely with other ML-family lenses. Wide open at f/2.8, the center shapness is acceptable while the edges remain soft. Stopping down to f/4 brings a clear improvement in contrast and sharpness, and the edges become fully sharp in the f/5.6–8 range. Contrast sits in a good range with pleasing tonal gradation, even under angled side lighting. With a focal length of 28mm, bokeh is modest and doesn't emphasize background separation — better suited to work that aims to capture atmosphere over background blur. The lens can produce vignetting wide open, which can be used as a creative device to frame the image; it fades as you stop down. It carries a multicoat coating that manages light well, but the wide front element catches a lot of light, so a lens hood is recommended when shooting into the light. Build quality feels solid in the hand — a genuinely usable wide angle option at a great price.
