Lens in like-new condition. This is the first version of the lens that Carl Zeiss sold to Contax. As one of the earliest versions, the glass was melted using the same formula as the Contax Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4, and performance is said to be nearly identical. Comparing quality to price, this lens is excellent value. The optics are pristine, with no scratches. Focus and aperture operate as smoothly as on a new lens. Internal components are tight, with no play or rattle. The exterior body is in like-new condition, but there are 2–3 small areas of paint loss or fine scratches along the lens barrel edges or around the focus ring and aperture ring (you have to look closely to see them).

How this lens renders

Compared to other lenses 24mm of the same spec from the same era, this ML stands out for its compactness and delivers an easy-to-control film-like image tone that's a pleasure to grade further. At f/2.8 wide open, the center is sharp and practically usable; the edges go a touch soft with a slight vignette lending it some character (which fades when you stop down). Stopped down to f/5.6–f/8, sharpness climbs to fill the frame and contrast tightens up noticeably — this is the sweet spot for landscape and architectural work. Given the 24mm focal length and the deep depth of field that comes with it, background separation isn't the main selling point, but you get a wide sense of dimension and solid detail retention across the frame. As for flare when shooting into the light, you can play with it as a creative effect; if you'd rather avoid it, I'd recommend putting on a lens hood for backlit shots. Overall, this is a practical manual focus wide angle lens on mirrorless — a great match for someone who wants that vintage character in a single, easy-to-carry package that slips into a bag for any trip.
