How this lens renders

Compared to the 50mm lens with similar specs, this Canon FL 58mm f/1.2 is Canon's f/1.2 (1964). Its charm lies in the soft, creamy rendering at wide open. At f/1.2, the center of the image is soft with a dreamy glow from spherical aberration. Nail the focus and you get that lovely film-portrait feel. Stopping the aperture down to f/2.8, sharpness and micro-contrast improve noticeably, peaking through the f/5.6–f/8 range. The bokeh is dimensional and punchy. Highlights have edges and take on a lemon shape toward the frame's edges, giving a textured, non-smooth look. Colors lean warm with a yellowish cast—classic single-coated glass from the 60s—very flattering for skin tones. This lens is prone to flare due to its single coating, which actually makes it wonderful for moody backlit shots. If you'd rather avoid flare, a lens hood is recommended when shooting into the light. It also produces vignetting at wide open that acts as a moody frame for the image (fading once you stop the aperture down to f/4). It's a great match for anyone who enjoys portrait work and fine-art images with a vintage feel, and it's well worth collecting as Canon's f/1.2.
