How this lens renders
Compared to a lens of the same spec — like the Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 — this Fujinon stands out for its EBC coating, which controls flare and ghosting well beyond its era. Shooting into backlight, the image still comes out clean and clear (if you want to avoid flare entirely, I'd recommend attaching a lens hood when shooting into the light). At wide open f/1.4, the center is sharp and genuinely usable. Stopping down to f/2.8, the edges sharpen up noticeably. And at f/5.6–f/8, it's sharp across the entire frame, on par with modern lenses. Mid-to-high contrast, with good micro-contrast lending the image depth. Colors lean toward a mid-warm tone — reds and yellows rich and saturated, greens transition naturally. The bokeh melts the background into a soft, smooth wash. At wide open, the highlights are fairly round with a touch of vignetting that helps draw the eye toward the center of the frame (fades as you stop down, completely gone by f/4). Stop down further and the highlights take on a hexagonal shape following the aperture blades (6 blades) — a distinctive signature of this lens. An excellent fit for anyone looking for a lens 50mm that's sharp and clean, handles backlight well, all at a very reasonable price. A practical, dependable choice among vintage lenses.
