How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in like-new condition. The Optical is pristine with no scratches. Focus and aperture glide smoothly, just like a brand-new lens. Internal components are solid — no rattling or movement inside. The exterior body looks like new, though there are 2–3 small spots of paint loss or fine scratches along the edges of the lens barrel, the focus ring, and the aperture ring (you have to look closely to spot them).
How this lens renders
Compared to the 50mm f/1.4 of the same spec, this Ricoh XR Rikenon stands out more for its vintage character than for clinical sharpness. Wide open at f/1.4, it renders soft, low-contrast images with a filmic feel. Once you stop down, contrast begins to build, and by f/5.6-f/8 the sharpness is noticeably more usable for serious shooting. The selling point is the swirly bokeh. The background melts away, with bokeh edges curling around the subject, while small pinpoint lights are sculpted into beautifully colored bokeh circles — delivering a dimensionality that modern lenses simply can't match. This lens flares easily and is very dramatic, making it fun to play with for backlit shots. If you'd rather avoid flare, I'd recommend attaching a lens hood when shooting against the light. It's well suited for someone looking for a vintage lens to capture character and mood, rather than clinical sharpness. Both a practical working lens and one worth collecting.
