Lens in like-new condition. Leica is renowned for trustworthy quality — the materials are beautifully crafted with meticulous attention to every detail. This is a collapsible lens, which makes it very convenient for storage (please note the rear element can potentially contact the sensor glass — tested with Sony A7 and confirmed no contact). This model features 10 aperture blades, producing perfectly round bokeh across the entire aperture range. The standout quality is the gorgeous background separation, more beautiful than typical lenses, with smooth and pleasing contrast rendition. Another must-try lens for vintage lens enthusiasts. The optics are pristine — no scratches. Focus and aperture glide as smoothly as a new lens. Internal components are solid with no internal rattle. The exterior body condition is like new, though there are 2-3 small spots of paint loss or scratches along the lens barrel edges or around the focus ring and aperture ring (need to look closely to notice).

How this lens renders

Compared to lenses of the same spec 50mm, the standout features of the Leica Elmar 50mm f/2.8 are its compact collapsible design paired with that unmistakable Leica build quality — you can feel how solid it is the moment you pick it up. No need to worry about sharpness. Even wide open at f/2.8, it's sharp enough to use right away, especially at close range where it's particularly crisp. Stop down to f/8 and the detail gets even tighter. As for contrast, it depends on the version — the newer Elmar-M delivers punchy contrast with vivid yet accurate colors, while the older version has lower contrast, giving a filmic tonality that leaves plenty of room for color grading. The bokeh is beautiful and gentle, melting the background at close range into a soft, dimensional rendering (a distinctive character of its own — not swirly bokeh). Colors are vibrant but true to life. With its portable size and dependable sharpness, it's well-suited for travel and street photography, as well as collectors seeking a true-pedigree Elmar. Definitely worth adding to a collection.
