How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in like-new condition. Glass elements are perfect with no scratches. Focus and aperture operate smoothly like a new lens. Internal components are solid, no internal rattle. The exterior body is like new, but there are 2-3 small spots of paint loss or fine scratches on the lens barrel edges or around the focus ring and aperture ring (you have to look closely to see them).
How this lens renders
Compared to the 28mm with the same spec, this one doesn't lean into a bold character. It positions itself as a wide angle lens that renders straightforwardly — colors are neutral and don't shift, and it pairs nicely with other ML-family lenses. Wide open at f/2.8, the center shapness is acceptable while the edges remain soft. Stopping down to f/4 brings a clear improvement in contrast and sharpness, and the edges become fully sharp in the f/5.6–8 range. Contrast sits in a good range with pleasing tonal gradation, even under angled side lighting. With a focal length of 28mm, bokeh is modest and doesn't emphasize background separation — better suited to work that aims to capture atmosphere over background blur. The lens can produce vignetting wide open, which can be used as a creative device to frame the image; it fades as you stop down. It carries a multicoat coating that manages light well, but the wide front element catches a lot of light, so a lens hood is recommended when shooting into the light. Build quality feels solid in the hand — a genuinely usable wide angle option at a great price.
