How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in good condition. Optics are perfect with no scratches. Focus and aperture turn smoothly like a new lens. Internal components are tight with no internal rattle or movement. The exterior body shows use, with easily noticeable scratches and paint loss throughout the lens barrel.
How this lens renders
Compared to the 55mm f/1.2 with identical specs, this is the f/1.2 first version in Nikon's F mount, so its character leans toward a soft, dreamy mood. Wide open at f/1.2, contrast is low, producing a film-like tonality that gives you nice flexibility when color grading. The focus point still holds good sharpness at shallow depth of field. Stopped down to f/2.8, sharpness and contrast improve noticeably, and at f/8 it is tack-sharp across the frame. The bokeh melts the background smoothly. The transition into the focus plane is gentle, with no hard edges (some light sources may show a slight cat's-eye shape). Wide open, it can also produce vignetting that frames the image and adds mood, which fades as you stop down. Flare from internal reflections can be played with as a creative effect. If you'd rather avoid flare, I'd recommend attaching a hood when shooting into backlight. A truly character-driven vintage lens, perfect for those who love a classic look and well worth adding to a collection.

Honest disclosure
Nikon 55mm f1.2
The Nikon Nikkor 55mm f/1.2 (1965-1978) was Nikon's first f/1.2 F-mount lens, a character-driven optic with a dream-like, low-contrast wide-open look that sharpens when stopped down.
