How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens in like-new condition. The glass is perfect with no scratches. Focus and aperture are silky smooth like a brand-new lens. Internal components are tight with no rattling or loose movement. The exterior body looks like new, but there are 2–3 small spots of paint loss or scratches around the lens barrel edges, focus ring, and aperture ring (you have to look closely to notice them).
How this lens renders
Compared to the 50mm with the same specs, this one delivers Planar-style sharpness and contrast, but at a fraction of the price of a Zeiss. Wide open at f/1.4, it gets slightly soft, especially at minimum focus distance. Stop down to f/2 and it gets noticeably sharper, and tack sharp from f/4 onwards. Contrast is excellent — full shadow detail is preserved, tonal gradation is smooth, and it's especially well-suited for black and white work. Colors are punchy and stable, with no shifts even when shooting into the light. Bokeh melts the background smoothly, and fringing is minimal (you may notice some purple fringing at f/1.4 in harsh lighting, which is normal for lenses of this era). Overall, this is a vintage lens that delivers a Planar character at an accessible price point — ideal for anyone looking for crisp, clean files with a film-like tonality. Practical to use and well worth adding to a collection.
