Inspector’s condition notes

Like-new condition lens. This is a rare model with build quality superior to the M-mount version. The bokeh renders beautifully, melting the background into an oil-painting-like quality. The optics are pristine, with no scratches. Focus and aperture are buttery smooth, just like a new lens. Internal components are solid and tight, with no play or rattling inside. The exterior body is in like-new condition, but there are 2-3 small paint chips or scratches along the edges of the lens barrel or around the focus ring and aperture ring (you need to look closely to notice them).

How this lens renders

Compared to the lens 50mm with similar specifications, this Fujinon 55mm f/1.6 opens up wider than the f/1.6, using a Xenotar-style formula. Its standout qualities are its light-gathering ability and the shallow depth of field you can achieve wide open, making low-light shooting effortless. Sharpness lands in a good range when adapted to a camera, and stopping down tightens up the detail rendition nicely—classic behavior for a lens of this era. In terms of bokeh, the M42 mount version is well known for its uniquely characterful background separation. It differs from the X-Fujinon (Fuji AX mount), which is sharp but doesn't quite have the same personality. Color tones lean slightly cooler than Pentax lenses, but this is easy to correct with in-camera white balance or in post. The build of the M42 relies mainly on plastic materials—it's lightweight, though it doesn't feel quite as solid in the hand as the all-metal lenses of the same period. For anyone looking for a fast vintage lens f/1.6 with distinctive bokeh character, the M42 is a practical option that genuinely delivers and is well worth adding to a collection.
