How we gradeInspector’s condition notes
Lens is in like-new condition. Optics are perfect, no scratches. Focus and aperture glide as smoothly as on a new lens. Internal components are tight with no internal movement or rattling. The exterior body looks like new, though there are a few small spots of paint loss or scratches — about 2–3 marks around the edges of the lens barrel, focus ring, and aperture ring (you have to look closely to spot them).
How this lens renders
Compared to wide angle lenses of the same spec, the standout of the Carl Zeiss Distagon lies in "Zeiss pop" — the high contrast and bold, saturated colors that are the signature of the Distagon family. This one is a wide angle retrofocus design, with an all-metal build that's solid and dense, worthy of the Zeiss name. Regarding sharpness, this Distagon family is known as one of the best lenses in its focal length. Sharp from wide open, and holds detail across the frame more firmly when you stop down to f/8. Contrast also holds up well even when shooting into backlight. Bokeh has a soft quality but still controls contrast in the out-of-focus areas — not mushy — giving the background a sense of dimension. The punchy colors and strong contrast are the charm that many seek in Zeiss lenses of this era. Physical observations: the lens body is somewhat larger than competitors of the same focal length, traded off with durability and a tight, German-style focus throw feel. Suitable for those looking for true Zeiss color and contrast, and worth collecting.
