The lens marketed here as the 'Canon Not SSC' is the Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 — the single black sheep of the FD standard-lens line. When Canon rolled out its Super Spectra Coating (S.S.C.), a more efficient multi-layer coating introduced in the early 1970s to raise contrast and suppress flare, nearly every FD lens received it. The budget 50mm f/1.8 was deliberately left on the older single-layer S.C. (Spectra Coating) to keep it cheap, and Canon's own documentation notes that when the New FD line arrived in 1979, every model EXCEPT the 50mm f/1.8 carried S.S.C. That omission is the whole story: the missing extra 'S' is why collectors and shooters call it the 'Not SSC' lens, and its absence of multi-coating defines its signature weakness for flare. Its established nickname is the 'nifty fifty' — casualphotophile dubs it 'the original nifty-fifty' — reflecting its role as an inexpensive, ubiquitous standard lens rather than a boutique character optic. People love it not for exotic rendering (it has no swirl or glow reputation whatsoever) but for unbeatable value: sharp centers, vibrant color, solid build on the early versions, and street prices that have historically dipped under $30. It is a bargain cult favorite, not a bokeh legend.
Verdict: The Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 'Not SSC' is a value-first standard lens, not a character optic. It rewards the shooter who wants clean, sharp, contrasty, vividly colored images on a shoestring — especially stopped down between f/4 and f/11. It's a poor fit for anyone chasing dreamy bokeh or sun-flare artistry: its single-coated design flares badly into the light and its out-of-focus rendering turns edgy and distracting at distance. Buy it as an affordable, dependable everyday fifty with a superb center and honest color, and manage the light rather than fight it.
