Carl Zeiss Distagon design, built under license with Rollei HFT coating

The Rollei HFT Distagon line consists of genuine Carl Zeiss Distagon optical formulas built by Rollei under license and finished with Rollei's own HFT (High Fidelity Transfer) multi-coating rather than Zeiss T* coating. Reviewers who have compared them to the equivalent Zeiss T* versions report that the optical performance is so close that the difference is very hard to detect in practice, which is the core of the lens's appeal: near-Zeiss rendering at typically lower cost. The reviews here cover two members of the family — a 35mm f/2.8 wide-angle praised as 'optically superb' with what one reviewer calls possibly the best contrast he knows in a 35mm lens, and a 50mm f/4 that behaves like an ultrawide-type design (very different from the Exakta/Flektogon school) and is 'ferociously sharp in the centre' even wide open. The cult following comes not from mythology or a nickname but from substance: exceptional contrast, smooth tonal gradients, praised colour rendition, and 'the way this lens paints' in portraiture. No established community nickname (of the 'Bokeh Monster' / 'Nifty Fifty' type) is evidenced in these reviews, so none is claimed.
Verdict: A Zeiss Distagon in all but coating: this is a high-contrast, center-sharp, faithfully-colored optic that rewards deliberate, stopped-down shooting and shines in portraiture where its rich tonal 'painting' is on full display. It is for the photographer who values near-Zeiss fidelity, exceptional contrast and clean rendering over any quirky vintage signature — and who is willing to stop down for edge performance and to vet an individual copy's focus feel. Not the pick for someone chasing swirly bokeh or edge-to-edge sharpness wide open, but a genuinely superb rendering lens for those who prize optical quality.
