The Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 pre-ASPH is the fast wide-angle for Leica M. Multiple versions exist — the pre-ASPH models (especially Steel Rim and later) offer character that the clinical ASPH lacks. For street photography in low light, this was THE lens.
Verdict: The romantic's fast 35mm. The pre-ASPH Summilux 35mm offers glow and character that clinical modern lenses can't replicate. If you want perfection, get the ASPH. If you want soul, get this.
The lens is known for its distinctive 'bubble bokeh' effect, where point light sources are rendered as perfectly circular 'soap bubbles' in the background.
The lens produces a vintage, slightly desaturated color profile with soft, pastel tones.
The lens is soft wide open, with sharpness improving significantly when stopped down. The center can be decent by around f/5.6.
The lens flares heavily due to its simple, single-coated optical design, but this can be used creatively.
The lens has low contrast, which contributes to its soft, dreamy rendering.
The lens exhibits heavy vignetting wide open.
