The Leica Summicron-R 90mm f/2 was Leica's portrait lens for the R-mount SLR system. Optically excellent, it delivers stunning portraits with smooth bokeh. Now undervalued as R-mount fades, it's a portrait powerhouse adaptable to mirrorless.
Verdict: The forgotten Leica portrait gem. The Summicron-R 90mm f/2 delivers stunning portraits with Leica quality. R-mount depreciation means accessible prices. One of the best values in Leica glass.
Smooth, creamy, never harsh; out-of-focus areas melt into overlapping discs of light, a standout feature especially at f/2 and f/2.8.
Neutral with a slight warmth, classic Leica rendition with particularly flattering skin tones.
Soft with a gentle glow wide open at f/2 (especially at edges); sharpness increases dramatically at f/2.8 and is sharp across the frame by f/4.
Well controlled for its era, with only minor ghosting and veiling glare into the light; built-in hood is effective.
High global contrast stopped down with excellent micro-contrast, giving a three-dimensional feel without harshness.
Present wide open, especially at corners, but largely gone by f/4.

The Leica Summicron-R 90mm f/2 is a lens for photographers who value character over clinical perfection. If you want a lens that delivers smooth bokeh, natural color, and a three-dimensional feel, this is it. It is not the sharpest lens wide open, and it is heavier than many modern alternatives, but it rewards careful technique with images that have a unique, timeless quality. If you are looking for a lens that will make your portraits sing and your backgrounds melt away, the Summicron-R 90mm f/2 is a classic choice. However, if you need maximum sharpness, lightweight handling, or the latest coatings, you may want to look elsewhere.
