The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF-D is the ultimate budget standard lens — often called the best value in photography. For decades, this was the lens every photography teacher recommended as the first prime. Its optical design is deceptively simple but remarkably effective, delivering sharp images from f/2.8 onwards that rival lenses costing ten times as much. The metal mount version (D) improved on the earlier plastic-mount AF variant.
Verdict: The people's fifty. Sharp, tiny, cheap, and capable of beautiful results. Every photographer should own one at some point. It proves that great photography doesn't require expensive glass.
The lens is very sharp throughout the majority of the aperture range (f/2.8-f/22), with images captured at f/1.8 being a touch on the soft side but still usable.
Slight vignetting is noticeable in the corners, but it is not extreme and can be easily removed in post-processing.
